Voter Registration Eligibility

To register to vote you must:

  • Be a United States citizen,

How To Register to Vote

In Texas, citizens do not register by political party, but simply register in their county of residence.

Texas DOES NOT offer fully-online voter register.  However, there are several ways to register to vote, some of which include using an online system for filling out the application that must then be printed, signed, and submitted.

To register to vote you may do any of the following:

  • Fill out online, print, sign, and mail the voter registration application;
  • Register in person at your county Voter Registrars office:
  • Request a postage-paid application by filling out this form so a voter registration application can be mailed to you,
  • Pick up mail-in applications at libraries, post offices, driver’s licenses offices, high schools or you county Voter Registrars office. Fill it out, sign, and mail the application.
  • Or register in person with a Volunteer Deputy Registrar(VDR) at a League voter registration event.

How To Update Your Voter Registration

If you need to update your name or address but still reside in the same county:
  • You may update your voter registration online,
  • You may correct your information on the back of your voter card and mail it back to your county's Voter Registrar, or
  • You may use any of the methods from the How To Register to Vote section above.
If you have moved from one Texas county to another:
  • You may now update your driver's license and voter registration online at the same time, or
  • You may use any of the methods from the How To Register to Vote section above.
If you have moved to Texas, welcome! You may use any of the methods from the How To Register to Vote section above.

Am I Registered to Vote

To confirm you are registered to vote you can:

Your Voter Registration Certificate

After you apply to register to vote, a voter registration certificate (your proof of registration) will be mailed to you within 30 days.  If you do not receive your certificate, please contact your counties' voter registrar office:

El Paso County Elections Office call 915-546-2154
All other counties

You should automatically receive a new color-coded certificate every two years in even-numbered years. If you have moved, you must update your voter registration to receive your new voter registration certificates at your new address.  The new voter registration cards for 2022-2023 are blue.

Check your certificate to be sure all information is correct. If there is a mistake, make corrections on the certificate and return it to your counties' voter registrar:

The information circled on the sample voter registration certificate, tells you where to vote and which races you can vote on:

The first circle is your voting precinct.  In many counties you must vote at the polling locations located within your precinct.  However,  El Paso  County allows it's registered voters to vote at any polling location within their county.
The information in the second circle can be used to figure out which elections and races you can vote in. All Texas voters can vote for some races, while other races are specific to the precinct

The League of Women Voters recommends that you bring your voter registration certificate with you to vote in case of any issues at the polling location about your registration  However,  it is not required to vote.

Become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR)

Many of the members of the League of Women Voters are Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDRs).

VDRs are entrusted with registering voters face-to-face either at events or by going door to door. VDRs make sure people are eligible, registered, and educated to vote.

El Paso County
Every month, El Paso County Elections Office hosts several in-person and on-line one-hour VDR training sessions; you can visit their website epcountyvotes.com for more information.
